Finding your audience for sustainability and advocacy

This month, new survey results show the most widely used social media platforms by Americans. While you may assume Facebook is the top dog, it’s worth looking at survey results to see how the platforms actually rank.

If you dive deeper into the Pew Research Center report, you’ll see not all platforms are equal when it comes to who is using them. While Facebook and YouTube rank high for the number of users, their audiences are significantly older compared to Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.

Are you interacting on the same social media platforms as your target audiences?

In my advocacy workshops, I walk people through a conversation to discover which platforms may be better for finding the people we want to reach through advocacy and outreach. If we’re preaching to the choir all of the time, how far do our messages really go?

With Earth Day coming up next week, I encourage you to reach outside your comfort zone and try something new. I did that with TikTok – a platform where younger people are seeking entertaining and educational content – this winter and it made me more comfortable with short video creation.

What advocates are sharing great sustainability content?

If you’re looking for some new advocates to follow for examples on sharing your story, check out a few of these examples:

Not sure how to share your sustainability story? Visit this Foodprints site, select a topic and share how you work to address the subject through your role in the agriculture community. These are the topics opponents to modern agriculture are discussing and are often the questions your audiences may be asking.

Looking for organizations leading conversations around sustainability for food and agriculture? Check out the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers in Action (USFRA) and Animal Ag Alliance for more resources.
