In my last blog post, I started a conversation about this month’s trip to San Antonio, but got side tracked with other issues surrounding life now and clouding my vision. So today, we look at the fun about the travel.
Despite having lived in the Lone Star state, I had never made the trip to the Alamo City. Even though we arrived on the midnight flight from Salt Lake City, I made it a point to see the Alamo my first (and only free) morning in town, despite the constant rain. There is so much reverence surrounding that historic landmark, I hope everyone who visits is able to experience that.
Attending a convention of this magnitude is always an overwhelming experience for an introvert. Being there for work as a staff member, makes it even more difficult to catch up with all my friends from across the country. I didn’t have near the opportunity for that as I had wanted. Fortunately the opportunity to interact and connect through social media builds amazing relationships with peers across the country. So even if we didn’t get to catch up as much as we wanted in person, all it takes is a tweet to carry on the conversation.
San Antonio doesn’t seem like a city home to 1.5 million people from my stay downtown. The chilly temps and rain may have had something to do with that. Several mornings I made it a point to go out and run 3 miles in different directions on city streets and down the Riverwalk. Such an awesome district to explore. The airport seemed really small for a city of that size as well.
The city has a ton of culture and history to explore. To be honest, I was a little less than impressed by the quality of mexican food on the Riverwalk. Maybe I just missed all the good places, but I had my hopes set high to fill up on some tasty tacos while down south. The rooms in our hotel had some very appropriate artwork for the trip though!
During the convention, I also had a unique experience of encountering a piece of my work that someone else is embracing and making good use of. I definitely had mixed feelings of regret and pride. Stay tuned in my next post to see what a blue cow has to do with it.
